Biography of the Department of Management Studies

The Department of Management Studies was established through the following milestones:

  1. Research Department - 1966
  2. Research and Management Department - 1981
  3. Department of Management Studies - 1988

In 1966, a new department named the Research Department was established. Dr. Ronald Findlay, a distinguished economist, was appointed as its head.In addition to research activities, the department opened management training programs on August 1981.

To accommodate training programmes, the department was relocated from the main campus of the Institute of Economics to Padamya Building in Hlaing Township on August 28, 1981. At that time, the department consisted of six staff members: one Professor (Dr. Khin Maung Kywe), two Assistant Lecturers, and three Tutors.Although proposals were made to upgrade the Research Department into a full-fledged Department of Management Studies, the order received was to expand the department’s functions instead. Therefore, it was restructured as the Department of Research and Management Studies.

The first management training course was launched to train senior managers from state-owned enterprises and government departments. The course commenced on October 17, 1983, and ended on January 13, 1984, lasting 13 weeks with 30 participants as on duty. A total of 69 experts, including faculty members from the University of Economics and specialists from various ministries, delivered lectures and discussions during the course. Faculty members from the Research Department actively participated in both research and related field trips.

On February 5, 1988, the Department of Research and Management Studies was reorganized and renamed as the Department of Management Studies. The Diploma in Management and Administration (DMA) which is a part-time programme was founded in 1955 by a group of academics from the faculty of the Department of Commerce and Administration Studies of the University of Rangoon (now Yangon University) headed by the late Professor William Paw in collaboration with professors the exchange professors from the University of Utah and also intellectuals who were senior officials from various ministries. First batch of DMA was opened on 1955 and totally eight students graduated on 1958. The program is designed 2-years programme and 3 Myanmar business cases are written as a requirement for the degree with the viva exam. The DMA program has been revised one-year online program since 65th batch in 2022. Blended online system with Virtual Classrooms and the YUEco Digital Learning Portal is used to learn the lectures.

The MBA Programme at Yangon University of Economics, the first MBA Programme in Myanmar, was launched in 1995. The Programme was extended to Executive MBA (EMBA) in 2002 and Online MBA in 2007. The programme is designed 2- year programme with writing of the thesis and viva examination. Online Learning Programme was changed for 26th batch in 2022 due to COVID-19. Face to Face Learning with LMS has been changed since 27th batch.

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program was introduced in the academic year 2001-2002. The BBA Honours program followed in the 2003-2004 academic year. YUEco collaborated with MNT Co., Ltd offered online MBA Programme in 2007.And then, this program was closed in 2020. First batch of MBA Programme was opened not only in YUEco Campus but also in Nay Pyi Taw. In 2018, MBA Programme in Nay Pyi Taw was opened as weekend program. These program is revised online program due to COVID-19. The 19th batch was designed both On-Campus and Online Programs, and still being offered until now.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management (PGDHRM) Programme as a one-year On-Campus course which is newly launched in October 2019 is offered at Yangon University of Economics, Hlaing Campus. Due to COVID-19, it revised online and still being offered as an online course until now.

On September 5, 2022, the Master of Sustainable Entrepreneurship & Social Innovation (MSESI) program was introduced. The programme is designed 2-years programme with writing of the thesis and viva examination using the Learning Management System (LMS) for delivery.

Yangon University of Economics, Department of Management, donates to Inle Lake region

From 7-4-2025 to 8-4-2025 at Naungkan Monastery, Nantpan Township, Inle Lake Region

A temporary clinic was opened to provide treatment to earthquake victims.

Students from various classes of the Department of Management Studies and donors are providing free healthcare and assistance to the needy.

They donated 17.5 million 99.5 million kyats in cash and nearly 20 million kyats worth of goods.

On the first day, free medical treatment was provided at Naungkan Monastery. In the evening, 50,000 kyats and supplies were donated to 154 households in Thalay Oo Inn Village, 65 households in Shwe Pyi Thar Upper Village, 25 households in Inyan Village, and 92 households in Nan Pan Pauk Pa Village. A mobile team also provided medical treatment in the villages they visited.

On the second day, the clinic continued to operate and the nurses providing health care at Naungkan School were also trained in basic health care procedures such as diabetes screening.

Additionally, it was learned that skin diseases were occurring in Pauk Pa Village, so the village administrator was given 42 household packages of anti-itch medicine, caradry, calamine lotion, baby mild soap, etc. through the Naungkan Monastery Sayadaw.

AEON Scholarship Program

Date: 2016–2017

In collaboration with the AEON 1% Club Foundation, Yangon University of Economics facilitated scholarships for its students. In 2016 and 2017, a total of 237 students from YUECO and Yangon University of Foreign Languages received financial support. The program also offered opportunities for international exchange and volunteer activities, aimed at nurturing young leaders.

Gender and Development Course Integration

Date: 2018

YUECO introduced a 'Gender and Development' course into its Executive Master’s in Development Studies (EMDevS) program. This course was developed in collaboration with SEGRI and AIT to integrate gender perspectives into development studies, particularly targeting professionals in public institutions and NGOs.

Tree Planting Campaigns

Date: 2017–2019

YUECO participated in several environmental initiatives including tree planting campaigns. In 2017, in collaboration with AEON Environmental Foundation, 13,000 trees were planted around Hlwaga Lake with 1,200 participants. In 2018, Rohto Mentholatum Myanmar co-organized a Rainy Season Tree Planting Festival on campus. In 2019, the Thingaha Foundation funded a campaign that planted 1,200 trees at Ywar Thar Gyi campus, with over 500 participants.

CHINLONE Project (Erasmus+)

Date: 2017–2020

Funded by the European Union under Erasmus+, the CHINLONE Project aimed to modernize Myanmar's higher education system. YUECO participated as a partner, contributing to curriculum development, faculty training, and the establishment of International Relations Offices to build global academic partnerships.

Partnership with University of British Columbia

Date: 2020–2021

YUECO collaborated with the University of British Columbia to strengthen policy research capabilities. The initiative included summer programs, faculty exchanges, and joint research projects addressing gender equity and youth civic engagement.

Control Plastic Challenge

Date: 2019

YUECO students initiated the 'Control Plastic Challenge' in Mawlamyine to raise awareness of plastic pollution. This project involved clean-up campaigns and educational activities to encourage sustainable environmental practices.

Youth Leadership Programs

Date: 2018–2020

YUECO students participated in international programs such as the Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program and United Youth Leadership Initiative Camp. These initiatives enhanced students’ leadership and civic engagement skills.

Workshop on Environmental and Natural Resource Economics

Date: 2019

YUECO co-hosted a workshop with SANDEE, ICIMOD, Duke University, and IPA to build research capacity in environmental and natural resource economics. The workshop focused on empirical research techniques for sustainable development.

Evaluation of Protected Areas

Date: 2018

A master’s thesis at YUECO evaluated the economic benefits of Lawkananda Wildlife Sanctuary. The study highlighted the sanctuary’s ecological significance and its potential for ecotourism and biodiversity conservation.

60th Anniversary Celebrations

Date: December 2024

YUECO celebrated its 60th anniversary with exhibitions, research presentations, and faculty honor ceremonies. These events showcased the university’s commitment to academic excellence and community engagement.
